Castle Street Edinburgh

Castle Street is named as for the view of Edinburgh Castle. Castle Street runs from Princes Street north to George Street. This is where the first mortgage company opened in Edinburgh. A famous writer was born here and at the junction with George Street stands a statue of Thomas Chalmers. There are restaurants, pubs, hotels, coffee shops, retail stores and residence.

Wind in the Willows Author Kenneth Grahame’ s Birthplace

Kenneth Grahame was born in Castle Street Edinburgh in 1859 and only lived here for 1 year before moving due to his fathers work.


The building was originally Built as No 4-8 which was a tenement block. The Scottish American Mortgage Company took up occupancy of the upper floors 6-8 Castle Street where they started trading circa 1890.  Scottish American Mortgage Company Castle Street Edinburgh
